Step by step

How to download a Pinterest thumbnail

Three steps, about five seconds, the same on phone and desktop.

  1. 1

Open the pin whose cover you want

Any pin works. Video pins and Idea Pins have a separate cover frame; photo pins have the smaller preview copy Pinterest serves in the feed.

  2. 2

Paste the link and press Download

Copy the link from the share menu, or the pin.it short link, and paste it into the box above.

  3. 3

    Pick the Thumbnail button

The results list every file behind the pin. The one labelled Thumbnail is the still image, saved as JPG or PNG with the size shown before you click.

What you get

Why people use this Pinterest downloader

Original quality, always

We read the pin payload directly, so you get the full-resolution image or the highest MP4 the pin ships with, not a re-compressed copy.

No login, no app

No Pinterest account, no browser extension, no APK. Paste a link in any browser on Android, iPhone, Windows or Mac and the file is yours.

No watermark added

The file you save is byte-for-byte what Pinterest serves. We never brand, crop, re-encode or overlay anything on top of it.

Nothing is stored

Links are resolved on the fly and streamed straight through. We keep no copy of your pin, no download history and no personal data.

Videos, images, GIFs, Idea Pins

One box handles every pin type, including multi-page Idea Pins and carousels, where each slide gets its own download button.

Built for speed

Static pre-rendered pages, system fonts and a lookup API with no client framework. The page paints before most sites finish their first request.

What counts as the thumbnail

Pinterest does not have one thing called a thumbnail, it has two, and which one you want depends on the pin.

A video pin or an Idea Pin has a genuine poster frame: a separate still image, uploaded or picked by Pinterest, that shows before the video plays. It is its own file on their CDN and it is what people mean when they ask for a video thumbnail.

A photo pin has no separate cover. What sits in the feed is a scaled copy of the same photo — 236, 474 or 736 pixels wide — generated from the upload. That copy is the thumbnail, and it is genuinely useful when a full-resolution file would be overkill.

This page reads the pin and labels whichever of the two it found, so you are never guessing which button is the still.

Why the poster frame is worth more than a screenshot

Pausing a video and taking a screenshot gives you a compressed frame at whatever size your screen happens to be, usually with a play button burned into the middle of it. The poster frame is the image Pinterest was handed at upload, so it is sharper, larger and clean.

Where that original is still on the CDN we hand you the original. The scaled poster URL in the pin data points at a resized copy, so we rewrite it to the /originals/ path and confirm with a real request that the file is there before the button appears. No dead links, and no button promising a resolution that does not exist.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

How do I download a Pinterest video thumbnail?

Paste the video pin’s link into the box on this page and press Download. Along with the MP4 renditions you get a button labelled Thumbnail — that is the cover frame Pinterest shows before the video plays, saved as a still image.

Is the thumbnail full resolution?

For video pins, yes wherever Pinterest kept the original. We rewrite the poster URL to the /originals/ path and check that the file really exists before offering it, so you get the uploaded frame rather than the 236-pixel grid copy. If no original is stored, the button says Cover frame and hands you the largest copy that does exist.

What does the Thumbnail button give me on a photo pin?

The small preview copy of that same photo — the one Pinterest renders in the feed and in search results. It is the right file when you want a lightweight image for a blog card or a mood board. If you want the big one, use the Original quality button above it instead.

Can I get the cover image of an Idea Pin?

Yes. Paste the Idea Pin link and you get every slide plus the cover. When the first slide is a video, the Thumbnail button is that video’s poster frame; when it is a photo, it is the preview copy of the first slide.

What format is the thumbnail saved in?

Whatever Pinterest stores, normally JPG and occasionally PNG. Nothing is re-encoded on the way to you, so the file you save is byte for byte the file on their CDN.

Can I use a downloaded thumbnail on my own site?

The image still belongs to whoever made the pin. Personal reference is one thing; republishing it, or using it in something commercial, needs the creator’s permission like any other photo.
